The Ancient Asari by calicoJill The Ancient Asari by calicoJill
I wanted to draw some ancient asari, and this is what came out. I like to think one is a hunter who can't sit still and the other, very relaxed and inquisitive. At first I added moons in the sky... but then I found out Thessia has no moons, but I think the amount of Element Zero on Thessia would give lots of creatures a nice glow to replace the moon light and give even the landscape a very stary sky-like look... also the butterflies started off as frustrating flowers and then I played around with the flowers duplicating them and they overlapped and looked like a weird butterfly and I went with it. I love when accidents like that happen. Anyway, I think this turned out better than I was hoping, so I'm happy with it. Also, Asari butts!

Are you sure you weren't thinking of James Cameron's Avatar when you decided to add a glow to all the little creatures?

New to the site.

I didn't realize how many people out there are inspired by the mass effect series. For what it is worth the story behind these characters from a glance is what makes the world live on.

Nicely done.

It really is an incredible universe. They did such a good job fleshing it out, that it's hard not to be inspired by it :)

Thanks a bunch!

Now that is a delightful piece of work. Almost reminds me of a Tolkien-based painting I saw once - the ancestral Elves waking up for the first time after their creation, near a big lake and under a starry sky, looking around at the world they find themselves living in. There's an innocence here that makes me really wonder what the asari were like before the Protheans came along and meddled with them.

Composition, coloring, all of it is really superb work. Thank you for sharing this!

:) why thank you! Agreed, I wonder what it is exactly that the Protheans DID to them. I have a feeling it would have something to do with mind melding and in a sense "sharing" information, not unlike how the protheans can. Would help explain their ability to meld minds, but then it kind of raises other questions heh. Maybe they'll go into that more in the next Mass Effect.

and hey, THANK YOU, for liking it!

I'll go full ME nerd here and say that all complex life on Thessia is biotics-capable due to the planet being rich with element zero.  Cerberus Daily News (when it was still canon) mentioned asari efforts to preserve the "manal", a biotic primate-analogue that's stated to be to the asari what the chimpanzee is to humans.  That means they share a common ancestor.  Unless the protheans had the time (which they probably didn't, given that the end of the previous cycle was approaching) to make all life on Thessia biotic, some asari were naturally biotic as an evolutionary adaptation.  When I say that it was an adaptation, I mean that the asari had evolved immunity to the carcinogenic effects of element zero exposure.  Somewhere along the line, a mutation occurred that caused an unknown asari to develop eezo nodes in her nervous system.  The rest is history.  Then, the protheans showed up, saw that Thessia had naturally biotic life, and thought that was awfully neat, since it's not common at all.  We know that the protheans viewed the asari as the best candidate for being the dominant species of the next cycle, so they engineered the trait to be endemic to the asari to accelerate their development.  As for the mind-joining, it's probably natural as well, since, as far as we know, the asari have been reproducing that way for as long as there have been asari.  As for why the asari live so long, the Cerberus Daily News tells us that their species doesn't experience senescence (cells becoming less-capable of dividing efficiently over time).  How that happened is unexplained.  Whether this has something to do with their immunity to element zero's carcinogenic effects is unexplained, but I have my own completely unsupported theory.  I'm done.

Now that that's over, I really like your picture.  The contrast of the asari being illuminated by the bioluminescent plants and their own photophores fills me with a sense or wonder.  These are ancient people looking out over their world and up at the stars and being struck with awe at the mystery and size of it.  Reminds me a lot of the awe the Mass Effect series filled me with when starting up the first game for the first time.

Nothing wrong with going full nerd! I kind of wish they would go a little more nerd in the actual games! I would LOVE to hear all about the evolution of all the species and the factors that led them to evolve how they did. They touched on it the most I think with the krogan and how they were technically prey animals on their planet (hence their eyes being more to the sides of their faces). Love hearing those little facts. Would have loved to hear more about the asari in particular.
I still think it mind be the mind melding that the protheans introduced. Probably not the nervous systems which would still allow them their reproduction but I think, if the protheans were really trying to help the asari develop, the ability to full on meld minds would be a HUGE benefit to their species and their ability to learn. Though we might never know unless they go into in the next Mass Effect.

and thanks! I loved hearing all your thoughts on it. Mass Effect lore makes me all hot and bothered =P Sometimes wish I could go back in time just so I could experience Mass Effect for the first time again. :)

It's possible, but protheans can communicate with people mind-to-mind by touching them.  Engineering the mind-joining into the asari would be redundant.  Also, as far as we know, the asari don't have any vestigial reproductive organs that they would have used before the protheans messed around with them.  I think it's more likely that the two species just happen to have a similar trait.

Yeah, Mass Effect lore is great - when Bioware isn't trampling all over it with retcons and nonsense.
